How does Criminology Affect Society

Challenges

            The criminal justice system affects society members through public policies. In this case, these policies ensure the public conforms and comply with the nation’s laws and maintain social order. The policies assist the justice system in decision-making and processes and provide guidelines to make new policies. These policies include drug legislation, juvenile policies, internal partner laws, immigration, and national security policies.

However, the Criminal Justice system has encountered numerous challenges in implementing these policies. Policies implementation processes require input from a variety of people making the process slow and long. For example, before passing a policy, a community issue has to be identified, the policy’s demand hashed out, resulting in government officials and special interest groups wishing to be heard.

The mention factor can result in the whole process halted since the different groups have different perspectives. Also, the influence of the justice system by offices of the government jeopardizes policy-making processes (Cochran et al., 2015).

Analysis

            Policy analysis is crucial once a law has been passed. Policy analysis helps in identifying whether a policy has elicited the intended outcomes. The analysis also allows the policy implementers to review the processes that might have influenced the overall outcomes. Of importance, policy analysis helps policymakers to improvements on a policy to serve the intended purpose.

Famous Case

            Miranda vs. Arizona, 1966 case changed the criminal justice policy. The court convicted Miranda for 20-30 years imprisonment for kidnapping and rape. As a result, Miranda was cut off from the outside world and was not effectively and fully informed of his rights during the interrogation process.

However, the Supreme Court ruled that prosecutors must inform detained criminals of their constitutional right against self-incrimination and right to an attorney before questioning (Miranda v. Arizona, 1966).
