Jefferson, in this message, seemed to take on a rather fair and objective view on expansion and the relationship between the colonies and Native Americans. Instead of seeking to conquer the Indians and overrule their communities and cities, Jefferson wants to lead them to become more agriculturally-oriented, develop more advanced civilizations, and combine their settlements with their own, to mutually benefit from each other. In general, Jefferson indicates that he sees westward expansion as a positive thing, so long as it doesn’t do harm to the Native American tribes already living there. He justifies the expedition and the prospect of further expansion through his belief that convincing the Indians to participate in their government’s benefits, it will ultimately be for the greater good for both of them, allowing liberal commerce through trading houses to continue.
