1. WHAT?
Through this semester’s psychology course, I have learned about my personality. I was fascinated to learn that personality defines the traits of a human being and influences how they behave, act and think. Interestingly, different individuals have different characteristics that contribute to their personalities.
Furthermore, I was fascinated to learn that some traits are inherited from our parents’ genetic makeup. In this case, some simple habits come from their parents; for instance, a parent who had a habit of chewing his/her tongue since they were young; it would not be surprising to find one of their children eliciting the same behavior. In this semester course, I learned that personality is critical towards gaining insight about oneself.
For that reason, the realization of personality helps me to understand my nature. Through the gained knowledge, I learned to appreciate life and develop a strong sense of belonging and love. God wants human beings to love themselves since he created us in his image, likeness and wants us to embrace the goodness of our nature.
Most importantly, I was intrigued to learn that personality distinguishes one person from another. For that reason, I set goals and promised myself that I need to work on all aspects of my personality to excel in both personal and professional perspectives.
Furthermore, the psychology course assisted in gaining insight that individuals who possess a better personality have a higher chance of progressing in life than those with average and weak ones. In this case, I learned that having a strong personality helps one deal with daily life issues better. Of importance, I believe that confidence is an essential part of personality growth.
For that reason, developing confidence will shape my attitude and elicit aggressiveness in trusting in my abilities. Furthermore, I learned to embrace different life experiences since they help in shaping my personality. For instance, humbleness, acquiring experience, identifying my strengths and weakness are essential in developing a better personality.
2. SO WHAT?
I was interested in the topics of personality disorders during childhood and aging. I learned that these disorders influence the way a person feels, acts, and behaves. In this case, personality disorders render an individual behaving and having inner experiences that often differ from the expectations of the society’s culture and beliefs. While doing my class assignments, I was excited to find out that personality disorders can be categorized into three different clusters.
In cluster A, most individuals develop suspicion; they distrust other people’s motives and tend to hold grudges. Also, the mentioned people show little interest in forming social relationships. In Cluster B, most of the individuals are emotional and impulsive. In this case, they tend to be antisocial, treating other people harshly without expressing remorse in their actions.
Others try to seek attention by overreacting and being dramatic. Cluster C personality disorders render individuals anxious; for instance, an individual with this disorder may feel unattractive and inferior. They may also dwell on criticism from other people and avoid making new progress in life, such as making new friends.
Of importance, I learned that personality disorders in the same cluster present with similar characteristics. I was intrigued to learn that some personality disorders are easily noted during early childhood, such as ADHD and autism.
In contrast, others like dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are likely to occur. Of importance, the course expounded my knowledge in understanding the difference between Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The course readings clearly described Alzheimer’s disease as a nervous system disorder that causes the brain cells to shrink, leading to dementia.
3. NOW WHAT?
Throughout the psychology course, I struggled to comprehend the difference in personality and the distinct manifestations of each type of disorder among males and females. However, I figured out that society is one factor that brings about differences between men and women.
In this case, the culture and social beliefs shape a person’s personality; for instance, I learned that women are expected to be polite, orderly, and compassionate in most African countries. On the contrary, men are expected to be assertive, brave, responsible, and able leaders.
I could not agree more that an individual’s experiences, especially in childhood, are responsible for one’s future personality; for instance, children are likely to inherit a strong personality if their parents taught them how to be confident and dependent.
However, those children who were not taught how to make the correct decisions and become dependent are likely to be vulnerable. Again, individuals who experienced disloyalty in childhood will live in fear of experiencing the same.
As mentioned earlier, learning about personality is crucial towards my personal growth in understanding what defines my nature as a human being. The psychology topic stands out for me since it is a sensitive topic affecting children, adults, scholars, and even uneducated individuals across the globe.
Most people encounter these psychological issues leading to adverse life outcomes such as suicides, disruption of family and society relationships, and personal and career development. I believe the psychology course has transformed me into an agent of change and an advocate of psychology issues in society. Using my newly acquired knowledge, I will educate society about personality development.
I am particularly interested in reaching out to parents and caregivers bringing up children. I purpose on informing them on the impact of children’s development on personality. I will encourage them to develop a strong foundation for their children for a better personality in the future.
Interestingly, I had no interest in personality disorders and their impact on society. However, the course has changed my perspective towards intervening and speaking up for person’s with personality disorders to improve their quality of life.
