  1. The loss of a person, regardless of their relationship, is usually the most challenging part of life. Coming to terms with such a loss is never an easy process. The videos have shown that healthcare givers also find it hard to tell of a patient’s death and prefer to use words other than death. After watching the video on the words we use, I felt a need always to be careful with words we use while expressing something, particularly in the nursing practice. The video on grief and loss stages is informative, which has enabled me to understand more about the grieving stage. Some people seem to be carried away by losing a loved one, while others seem to cope almost immediately with such a loss. After watching this video, I felt the need to embrace one’s feelings towards grief and loss. I also felt that there is a need to grieve a loss as it is part of healing.
  2. The video on words we use showcases the possibility of misinterpretation when proper words are not used to explain a specific thing. I felt that using inappropriate words to express something in healthcare is negligence, affecting care delivery and the quality of care. As a result, it affects the quality of care given to patients. I also thought that using softer words on something would be more appropriate than the actual words. However, later on, I saw that they lead to misunderstandings and result in poor healthcare decision-making. Moreover, in the video on grief and loss stages, I also noted that every person goes through grief phases. I understood that the steps outlined help in reducing the pain of loss and accepting the new reality. I then realized that people grieve differently, but the feelings may occur without a defined process.
  3. The video of words we use brought about some interesting facts. The video has identified that it is human nature to find it challenging to talk about some things, such as death. Therefore, they tend to use other words to avoid talking about such things. It has also raised the possibility of leading to misunderstanding, confusion, or wrong care decisions. For instance, when the doctor in the confusing video departure of a patient to getting away from the healthcare institution rather than death (Pallium Canada, 2015). In the video of grief and loss stages, some of the facts presented include the grieving process, which occurs in stages (Legacy, 2019). Also, a loss is usually hard to process life experience that makes people in one way or another grieve. It has pointed out that most people experience these feelings during grieving, but it does not have to occur in a specific pattern.
  4. I have learned that I will, in one way or another, encounter the death of a patient in the course of my nursing practice. I should therefore be conscious of other words people usually use when death occurs to make it softer to the bearer of the bad news. Also, I have learned that it is also essential to be careful with the words I choose to use in expressing something to avoid any form of misinterpretation or poor decisions in the provision of healthcare. Moreover, learning the stages of grieve is vital in the nursing practice since one will understand patients’ and their loved ones’ reactions to loss and grief.
