Written Response Quiz
I’m studying and need help with a History question to help me learn.
The minimum word count for these question sets is 150 words each. Of course, 150 words is just a baseline, as I suspect it will take more than that to fully answer each question set. For these, you must also provide specific examples using quotes and citations from the text for written-response questions, using MLA in-line citations. Please also number your responses to all questions. If you have trouble accessing it, or if you encounter a technical problem will taking it, then contact me immediately and explain the problem.
NOTE: I WILL NOT GRADE RESPONSES THAT DO NOT PROPERLY QUOTE AND CITE FROM THE TEXT(S), DO NOT MEET THE MIN. WORD COUNT, OR ARE NOT NUMBERED TO CORRESPOND TO THE QUESTIONS ASKED.
The following written-response questions are exactly as they will appear on the quiz.
Question 1 (4 pts)
CHOOSE ONE QUESTION SET:
Question Set 1: Re-read chapter 1, “Betty’s Daughter,” in Dunbar’s Never Caught. Then answer the following set of questions:
- Describe the system of slavery as practiced in the Washingtons household and estate. Where and in what capacity did the most “valued” and favored slaves work? Was the birth of slave children considered an advantageous or disadvantageous event for the slave master? Why?
- Who were Betty and Andrew Judge, and what role did race and gender play in their romance, relationship, and status – both to one another and to the Washingtons?
- At the end of this chapter, how does Dunbar depict the typical lives of slave children, particularly those like Ona who were raised in the slave master’s household?
or
Question Set 2: Re-read chapters 2–4 in Dunbar’s Never Caught. Then answer the following set of questions:
- Describe the how slavery was practiced (to the extent it was) and regarded in the two main cities discussed in these chapters, namely New York and Philadelphia? How did this differ from Mt. Vernon, Virginia, and the other southern states? Give examples from the text.
- Describe Ona’s transition to Northern life (according to Dunbar). What were some of her new roles, duties, and expectations? Give examples.
- How might this new and relatively freer political and social climate have impacted her thinking about her own freedom as an individual and fuel a desire to escape bondage? Again, give examples from the text.
Min. 150 words (total), providing specific examples using quotes and citations from the text for both questions, using MLA in-line citation style. You must also number your responses to both questions. I WILL NOT GRADE RESPONSES THAT DO NOT PROPERLY QUOTE AND CITE FROM THE TEXT(S), DO NOT MEET THE MIN. WORD COUNT, OR ARE NOT NUMBERED TO CORRESPOND TO THE QUESTIONS ASKED.
Question 2 (2 pts)
Why reveal the ending in the title, “never caught”? What is Dunbar’s motivation for solving (or denying) the mystery of Ona’s fate as a “runaway slave” before the reader ever turns the first page?
NOTE: This is an open-ended question. You do not have to cite or write a min. word count, though please offer at least a few thoughtful sentences
Question 4 (4 pts)
One of history’s “great ironies” is that the Mexico encouraged Whites to settle Texas in the 1820s and 30s in order to provide a “buffer against Comanches,” and that the seminal events in founding of the Texas Republic were actually the upshot of “a misguided scheme to stop the Comanches” (Gwynne 25). Re-read chapter three in S.C. Gwynne’s Empire of the Summer Moon. Answer the following set of questions:
- Utilizing chapter three, Describe the encounter of the Spanish with the Comanches. What animal did the Spanish introduce to the plains Indians, and what impact did this have on ascendency of the Comanches?
- Referring to the latter part of chapter three, describe the Comanches as a distinct group of plains Indians (socially, politically, militarily, religiously). How were they different from other tribes? What made them so formidable, for so long?
