Nursing Shortage: Nurse workforce shortage are predicted to get worse as baby boomers age and healthcare needs increase… Nursing Shortage Nurse workforce shortage are predicted to get worse as baby boomers age and healthcare needs increase (AACN, n.d.). Registered nurse openings increase as nurses are retiring and leaving the workforce for various reasons such as burnout (AACN, n.d.).   Enrollment increases to nursing educational programs does not meet the demand for nurses (AACN, n.d.). Nursing leader interventions that will impact the shortage is a focus on retention of nurses, attention to safe staffing ratios, and attention to quality care.
